The Moment of Truth:

  by Todd

I have been working diligently to develop this new glassing process. These three boards were a clear representation of the progress in the technique.

The first board(green) was nearly scrapped but was salvaged at the last minute.

The second(5'10"), better, but there were still some issues.

The third(6'2") is where it all finally came together. The board was still not perfect, but it was so close that Chad quickly declared it to be his on test day.

Test day came, and the team was off to an undisclosed break somewhere in SoCal.

The Synergy team riders(Chad, Chris and Billy) were given the task of putting the boards through their paces.

They were so anxious to start ripping up the waves that we had to call them back in to put their jerseys on.

One after another it began...the spray of water from a snap...the explosion of a launch...and the excitement on the beach of watching these incredible surfers do their stuff.

For three hours these wave warriors danced the dance of power and grace. Stopping only momentarily to switch boards or get a quick chug of water.

There were so many photos we still haven't gotten through all of them, and of course, some of the best moments did not make it on film.

Here are some of the shots that we like so far.

Maiden Voyage of the Fishbomb:

It began with a vision...a strange optical illusion, witnessed by Todd, one morning at El Porto. One moment, a skewed vision, the next, the Fishbomb...the newest addition to the Synergy quiver. "Will it work?", they asked. "Not sure...", was the reply...but it did not stop the forward momentum that was created with that strange, quirky idea to make a board that paddled and caught waves like a fish, but had the responsiveness of, well, that favorite board of yours. After weeks of wondering if it would float or maybe just roll over, the journey to Tressles for the maiden voyage was on....even though the glass was still a bit tacky. No problem... "We'll just sand it at the beach." Don't forget, we may be dedicated to getting this board done, but we're sure not gonna miss a session at Trestles for anything! And so it was, that the Fishbomb, at around 10 am on the morning of June 2 hit the water for the first time. Todd, then Trevor, then some guys we met on the beach all took turns feeling it out. It floated all right, but was it fun? In a nutshell, it's "almost like cheating..." as one surfer put it. "It catches waves like a fish, but I was surprised at how quick it was to respond...wow. Super fun." So it's back to the shaping shack to make it even better...but for now, we are stoked to have such a successful innovation!
