Hands Across the Sand Takes Aim at Offshore Drilling
By · CommentsThousands of hands joined together last Saturday June 26th in protest of offshore drilling in over 30 countries worldwide, with 800 related events and over 16 in San Diego County alone. Participants joined hands for 15 minutes stretching across hundreds of yards of beach at each location in hopes of sending a message discouraging offshore drilling and sounding off for clean energy.
The act was designed to be simple, yet effective:
STEP 1 Go to the beach at 11 AM in your time zone for one hour, rain or shine.
STEP 2 Join hands for 15 minutes at 12:00 forming lines in the sand against oil drilling in our coastal waters.
STEP 3 Leave only your footprints.
Hands Across the Sand‘s organizers called the protest a success, and added “The message is simple. No offshore drilling. This oil spill in the Gulf ought to wake people up. The Gulf could become a dead zone. It’s going to take decades to clean that up. [We] don’t want it happening anywhere.”
